DIASPORA…

…the scattering of a group from their homeland, drifting apart over time and space, losing contact with each other.

The EWERT family arrived in Cleveland, Ohio during the 1890s, on three steamships: August EWERT, his wife Wilhelmine [surname unknown] and their six known children, Julius, August2, Elisabeth, Augusta, Herman, and Fritz. The two sisters also brought their husbands and several children. After they arrived in Cleveland, as the US Federal Census makes clear, they lived very close to each other or even within the same household at times. From August2‘s funeral records, they continued to remain close into the thrid generation. Then, after the older immigrant EWERTs died, they no longer had a patriarchal center, they developed new interests, and even drifted to other cities, though a number of them still live in the Cleveland area.

Today, many descendants have no knowledge of each other nor of their family history. The sons of August and Wilhelmine chose more Americanized spelling variations for their surnames. Over the following decades, EWERT became EVERT for most of them and EVERETT for Julius.
